Josh does comedy for a living. Yet his conversion story is anything but comedy. Despite not being raised in the faith, addictions to drugs, lusting, and lack of focus in school, he has both converted and is now living a life of doing stand-up comedy. Josh tells us his history from reaching rock bottom to how he got out of it to where he is today.
Stand-up specials are in no short supply on Netflix and elsewhere. Yet much of the comedy popular can be somewhat vulgar. Josh Harris is a Catholic convert who also does Christian comedy. If you’ve ever taken a history class you’ve probably heard one story or another about Catholics involvement in historical events. But you might have gotten the wrong story. But listen to a few of our panelists discuss what the truth really is, and where you might have been led astray. This and so much more… on Honest To God.
While many Catholics know about St. Maximilian Kolbe offering his life in place of another man at Auschwitz, not as many know his full backstory, specifically what he did in the months leading up to that moment while in a jail cell with nine other prisoners. Katy grew up bouncing around between different denominations.
When she went off to college though, life got rough and she felt lonely. Then she came across Campus Catholic Ministries and while it started her conversion, she had a lot of questions on the Eucharist which when she wanted to become initiated she soon felt a physical pain. Why would that be?
There are plenty of conferences of other denominations that take place in large convention centers.
Catholics actually have one too, put on by FOCUS Missions the first week in January: SEEK. Four college students from Kennesaw State University stop by to explain what the conference is, what it entails, the highs (and lows), and why go.
It’s more important than ever for the Church to try and retain youth with more and more preferring to have no religious affiliation. This is done through youth ministry but even that can be a challenge, especially with technology being such a big distraction. In 2024, what is the best way to get teens to not only come to events but to keep coming and get something out of it so they stay with the faith once they graduate high school? Many parishes use LifeTeen for their Youth Ministry and we have missionaries from there to explain what works and does not work in youth ministry.
So wait… Lent starts on Valentine’s Day this year?

But what is it exactly and how do they utilize it? What are its benefits and its challenges? LifeTeen missionaries come by to explain the what, how, and why of their Rule of Life and what it entails.
Just as there are multiple Lord of the Rings movies there also are multiple HTG episodes on it!
In this second episode of the series, we delve into questions such as why read the book, could there be another mythology series like that today, and is there reason why perhaps one shouldn’t let their kids read it because it’s like Harry Potter in that it promotes magic?
So I’m gonna be honest. We threw this episode together very last minute…
But even so, our panelists and hosts came together and recorded an absolutely fantastic episode of Honest to God! They went into the school that they all met at (which is now closed!) to how giving your kids a smartphone should be child abuse! So tune in and enjoy this fantastic episode of HTG.

In today’s landscape of film and TV, it can seem like there’s someone out there bent on destroying it all for seemingly no gain, with beloved franchises and classic fairy tales falling by the wayside with lackluster films being made. On today’s episode of HTG, we dive into the possibility of that evil being not just a corrupt businessman, but the source of Evil itself.

Environmental Sustainability is most common in the secular world nowadays.
But the way they seem to think we should go about it is by completely removing ourselves from the planet as much as we can. But what they don’t realize is that God put us on this planet to actually be one with it. And on today’s episode of HTG, we discuss how we as Catholics can go about being good with the planet we’ve been given. Whether that’s by buying local and eating healthy. or it’s living off the land and growing our own food. You’ll walk away from today’s episode with some practical tips for living a little more sustainably.

Are you ready to date?
No really, when was the last time you took a long look at yourself and asked if you think you’re ready to fully make the commitment that comes with dating someone? Because it’s a much more important question than we think it is. Our dating lives have become so transactional in today’s society. So today on Honest To God, we sit down with Fr. Martin O’Connor to talk to him about why it’s important that we know how ready we are for dating.

We have a panel that consists of people with and without tattoos.
Since the Catechism does not talk about tattoos, only on bodily mutilation, it’s up to us to decide if we are yea or nay on them. We look into the arguments both for and against. Our bodies are a temple and we are made in the image and likeness of God. But, self-expression can be a beautiful thing, and remembering our past sufferings as we continue forward on our journey in life is important too.

It is known the media often pokes fun at Catholicism and portrays it in a negative way, like nuns being mean.
This is true and there are examples of it we discuss. However, in looking at the overall picture, it does not appear to be as bad as you think. Looking at major movies, there actually are a good number of instances where movies match up with Catholic teaching in underlying ways and show characters seeing the Church as an essential and important party. There are also examples in TV and one you may not have thought of Bollywood.

We’ve discussed Theology of the Body from young adults out on their own, but what about from college students?
Their views are often different than older young adults. It turns out these students from Georgia Tech know way more than just engineering. They discuss what longing is, the difference between staring and gazing, the human heart, morality, and why TOB is needed now despite it being a decades-old idea.

With the rise of streaming services, binge-watching has become part of daily vocabulary.
Typically if you’re watching something for more than an hour that’s not a live sporting event, that would be considered binge-watching. While it is okay to need a break every now and then, it can be too much, too often, leading to dopamine overload. We often see binge-watch not just because we like the content, but because it is a pacifier. If it’s getting in the way of other responsibilities, especially spiritual ones, then it’s a problem. It is robbing us of physical human interaction and getting to truly experience the world due to constant stimulation.
“The Spiritual Cost of Binge Watching” by panelist Justin Saviano - https://georgiabulletin.org/news/2022/06/the-spiritual-cost-of-binge-watching/
C.S. Lewis quote on masturbation that can be applied to binge-watching/tech obsession too: “I agree that that the stuff about ‘wastage of vital fluids’ is rubbish. For me, the real evil of masturbation would be that it takes an appetite which, in lawful use, leads the individual out of himself to complete (and correct) his own personality in that of another (and finally in children and even grandchildren) and turns it back: sending the man back into the prison of himself, there to keep a harem of imaginary brides. And this harem, once admitted, works against his ever getting out and really uniting with a real woman. For the harem is always accessible, always subservient, calls for no sacrifice or adjustments, and can be endowed with erotic and psychological attractions which no real woman can rival. Among these shadowy brides he is always adored, always the perfect lover: no demand is made on his unselfishness, no mortification is ever imposed on his vanity. In the end, they become merely the medium through which he increasingly adores himself.” – C.S Lewis.
